Lion Heart Walk

Save the date! The 2024 Lion Heart Walk will held be on Saturday, September 28, starting at 4:30 pm in New York City. More details to come!

This year our walk will take place on the East Side of Manhattan. We will end our walk at the East Wing (private room) of the Stumble Inn, 76th Street & 2nd Avenue. Our meeting place, detailed information and maps will – as usual – be provided prior to the walk.

This is the 18th time that we will walk in New York City!

The Lion Heart Walk is the foundational fundraising activity for Lion Heart.  This is the 18th time that we will walk in New York City.  It is much more than a walk.... we come together as a group of friends and family who share a desire to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.  But we also have a good time...After the walk Kathleen hosts all walkers with drinks (open bar) and dinner.  During the drinks and dinner, Lion Heart Grantees will share the results of their research in short presentations. (They will try to do so in language that we understand).

Each year, we introduce our Lion Hearts to places in the city that they might never have visited.  Sometimes we even surprise long time New Yorkers.

During the pandemic, faithful Lion Hearts from around the world participated in a virtual walk, joined by a small group in New York.

Lion Heart is committed to finding a cure for breast cancer. Founded and led by Kathleen van Rijn, Lion Heart supports Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven and the Yale Cancer Center by endowing breast cancer research grants.

Lion Heart conducts fund raising events throughout the year. The Lion Heart team walk and dinner is Lion Heart’s original fundraiser. This annual event takes place in New York City. Every year the Lion Hearts walk and during the Lion Heart dinner listen to our research grantees speak about their work.

In 2023, Lion Heart raised $ 150,000 and since its inception, the team has raised over $1,650,000. Every dollar raised matters. Lion Heart has no overhead costs. All our funding goes directly to the researchers awarded our Lion Heart grants.

Lion Heart receives applications for research grants from Yale Cancer Center researchers looking for pilot funding to begin interesting new avenues of exploration. In December, 2023 Lion Heart awarded its twelfth series of research grants.

The funds raised by Lion Heart team members have the potential to aid breakthrough research and truly make a difference. Lion Heart’s goal is to help find a cure for breast cancer through its support of Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale New Haven.
